Understanding & Treating Shame

This self-paced training is designed for Social Workers, Counselors and MFTs seeking a deeper understanding of shame and its impact in therapeutic settings. Through a comprehensive video presentation, downloadable slides, and a participant handout, you’ll explore the neurobiology of shame, differentiate it from related emotions, and learn how to apply shame-informed frameworks in your clinical work.

You’ll be introduced to the Four R’s framework, gain practical tools for intervention, and develop strategies to integrate shame-awareness into treatment planning. Reflection activities throughout the course support the development of your own clinical insight and self-awareness.

Participants who successfully complete the course will be able to:

1. Describe and differentiate shame from related emotions like guilt and embarrassment

2. Illustrate the neurobiology of shame and its impact on clients’ emotional regulation and behavior

3.  Apply the Four R’s framework to recognize, respond to, and reduce shame in clinical work

4. Develop  practical, therapeutic interventions to help clients process and heal from shame

5.  Develop greater self-awareness of your own shame responses and how they show up in the therapy room

6. Classify shame-informed treatment plans that promote safety, connection, and long-term healing

Course Completion Requirements:

To receive continuing education credit, participants must complete all course modules, pass the post-test with a score of 85% or higher, and submit the course evaluation. CE certificates are issued by email immediately upon successful completion of all requirements.

Meet Your Instructor

Jenn Bovee is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, EMDRIA-Certified EMDR Therapist, and EMDR Consultant specializing in complex trauma, dissociation, and chronic illness. She is the owner and Clinical Director of The Mental Wellness Center in Central Illinois and the founder of My Mental Wellness Company, where she provides consultation, continuing education, and business coaching for clinicians and group practice owners.

With over 20 years of experience in mental health, Jenn integrates EMDR, AEDP, and somatic approaches to help clients achieve deep, lasting healing. She is Level II trained in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and holds advanced certifications as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP-II) and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC).

Jenn is also an author and national trainer known for her engaging, experiential teaching style. Her trainings focus on advanced EMDR techniques, shame-informed therapy, neurodiversity-affirming practice, and trauma-informed leadership.
