Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Introduction

Jenn Bovee, LCSW, CRADC, CCHt, CCTP II
EMDRIA Certified Therapist & Consultant

This self-paced training is designed for interns and newer therapists seeking a deeper understanding of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and how to use it with increased efficacy in therapeutic settings. Through a comprehensive video presentation, and downloadable slides, you’ll explore the background and importance of CBT, what mistakes many inexperienced therapists make, and how to use it avoid them in the therapy room.

You’ll be introduced to the three levels of cognition, cognitive distortions, what the B in CBT actually means that many new clinicians forget, and the structure of an effective CBT session. You’ll also gain practical tools for intervention, and develop strategies to integrate into treatment planning. Reflection activities throughout the course support the development of your own clinical insight.

Participants who successfully complete the course will be able to:

  • Describe the cognitive model and differentiate the three levels of cognition: automatic thoughts, intermediate beliefs, and core beliefs.

  • Summarize the current evidence base for CBT, including the conditions with the strongest research support and its documented limitations.

  • Demonstrate the components of a structured CBT session, including mood measurement, agenda setting, homework assignment, and client feedback.

  • Apply core CBT interventions, including thought records, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and behavioral experiments.

  • Identify common implementation errors, describe strategies for adapting CBT to diverse clients, and determine when referral or supervision consultation is indicated.
