The Stages of Change:
Meeting Clients Where They Actually Are

Jenn Bovee, LCSW, CRADC, CCHt, CCTP II
EMDRIA Certified Therapist & Consultant

This self-paced training is designed for interns and newer therapists understand which tools to use and when in therapeutic settings. Through a comprehensive video presentation, and downloadable slides, you’ll explore the background and importance of the stages of changes, how clients move through them, what mistakes many inexperienced therapists make, and how to use the Tactics Toolkit avoid them in the therapy room.

You’ll be introduced to the Six Stages of Change, client language markers for each, how to match the process to the stage, and the mismatch traps new therapists often fall into, and more. You’ll also gain practical tools to conduct a Stage Assessment Drill, and develop strategies to implement.

Participants who successfully complete the course will be able to:

  • Describe the stages of change in the Transtheoretical Model (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and relapse as recycling), including the model's evidence base and current critiques.

  • Assess a client's current stage of change using verbal and behavioral markers from clinical dialogue.

  • Match stage appropriate processes of change and interventions to each of the stages.

  • Apply a minimum of three stage matched tactics (e.g., permission based feedback, decisional balance, change planning, relapse debriefing) to clinical case material.

  • Identify stage mismatched interventions in clinical examples and select corrective, stage consistent responses.
