An Introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Jenn Bovee, LCSW, CRADC, CCHt, CCTP II
EMDRIA Certified Therapist & Consultant
This self-paced training is designed for interns and newer therapists seeking a deeper understanding of the crucial difference between comprehensive DBT and DBT-informed practice, and master specific, scripted techniques for validation, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through a comprehensive video presentation, and downloadable slides, you’ll explore the background and importance of DBT, what mistakes many inexperienced therapists make, and how to use it avoid them in the therapy room.
You’ll be introduced to the four modes of full-model DBT, the treatment hierarchy, and what the evidence honestly says. You’ll also discover the Four Skills Modules (Mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness), with tools you will use this week.
Participants who successfully complete the course will be able to:
Describe the biosocial theory and the central dialectic of acceptance and change that underlie DBT.
Differentiate comprehensive DBT from DBT-informed practice, including the four modes of the full treatment model.
Summarize the evidence base for DBT, including the populations with the strongest research support and its documented limitations.
Demonstrate core skills from the four DBT skills modules, including Wise Mind, TIPP, Check the Facts, opposite action, and DEAR MAN.
Apply validation techniques and behavioral chain analysis in session, and determine when referral to a comprehensive DBT program is indicated.
