Motivational Interviewing That Actually Changes Sessions

Jenn Bovee, LCSW, CRADC, CCHt, CCTP II
EMDRIA Certified Therapist & Consultant

This self-paced training is designed for interns and newer therapists seeking a deeper understanding of Motivational Interviewing and how to use it with increased efficacy in therapeutic settings. Through a comprehensive video presentation, and downloadable slides, you’ll explore the background and importance of MI and how to use the four tasks in the therapy room.

You’ll be introduced to the spirit of MI, distinguish between change talk and sustain talk using the DARN CAT framework, and practice core reflective listening techniques. Most importantly, you will leave with a tactical toolkit featuring seven specific moves…including scaling rulers, double-sided reflections, and agenda mapping…that you can apply immediately to navigate ambivalence, overcome discord, and support your clients’ autonomy.

Participants who successfully complete the course will be able to:

  • Describe the spirit of Motivational Interviewing and the four tasks (engaging, focusing, evoking, planning) as presented in the 4th edition (Miller & Rollnick, 2023).

  • Distinguish change talk from sustain talk in client speech using the DARN CAT framework.

  • Demonstrate reflective listening, including at least one simple and one complex reflection, during structured practice.

  • Apply a minimum of three MI consistent tactics (e.g., scaling rulers, elicit provide elicit, double sided reflection) to clinical case material.

  • Identify the righting reflex and select an MI consistent alternative response to sustain talk and discord.
